"What is EitE?" you ask?
"Eric in the Elevator" is an Elevator Talk Show, done in "semi-improv" style, and filmed annually at a science fiction convention. The unique community of science fiction fandom makes for a (miraculously) mostly working end product.
The basic format is as follows: there are two chairs and a potted plant between the two chairs (The potted plant is an important traditional element!) in the Elevator. Three people are in the elevator: the talk show host (in one of the chairs), the cue card chick (outfitted with placards reading "Applause" and "Laughter", and the cameraperson. People get on the elevator (it is, after all, a working hotel elevator), sit in the chair, and then...
"Thank you, and welcome back to... 'Eric in the Elevator'. My next guest --"
Usually, people are pretty quick on the uptake, and are usually provided with "the reason" that they are on the show. These have been known to include:
- They are on a book tour. EitE is kind enough to provide the physical book, as well as the title. ;-7
- They are some other kind of celebrity, which they learn right then and there.
- Or, their segment is about something about them personally (their mode of dress/costume, their companions, some chance comment they made as they stepped onto the elevator. (We call these the "found art" interviews; one of the single best segments of all time came from riffing off of this one guy's T-shirt.)
It sounds wacky; it sounds strange; it sounds zany. You may laugh. Actually, we kinda hope you laugh, because we're trying to produce some kinda comedy, here... %-}
