Olympic National Park -- Rialto Beach

September 10, 2010

We camped at Mora Campground, right near Rialto Beach. The ranger had told me that no reservations would be necessary after Labor Day, so we paid only $12/night!

We picked a campsite that was nice and large.

This interesting tree was right outside our bedroom.

In the morning, we went out to see the beach. It was supposed to be good for birdwatching, but mostly all I saw were seagulls. There was one Pelican, but he didn't look like the endangered Brown Pelican.

I did see an unfamiliar species of slug, which I found out later was an Aryan Alder, an invasive European species.

We put our feet into the cold water. Photo by Eric.

The rocks off the beach look like California's Franciscan rocks, but I believe their geology is entirely different. Roadside Geology of Washington says they are the result of wave erosion.

Eric took a picture of these smoothly-polished rocks on the beach.

On to Cape Alava.
