Olympic National Park -- Hurricane Ridge

September 9, 2010

As we approached the ranger booth on the road to Hurricane Ridge, the highest point of road access in the park (6,000 ft, 1830 m), I could see fog everywhere. I said to the ranger, "It's not going to be worth going up to Hurricane Ridge today, is it?"

"No, it should be," she told me. "What they're seeing up there is that half a mile before the lookout, you get above the clouds, and you should have a great view."

For almost the entire 12-mile (19-km) drive up, I fought every instinct in me to turn around. There was so much fog, you could barely see the road. As we got close to the top, I saw one overlook after another, with nothing but fog visible. But the ranger was right. Just before the ridge, we reached the top of the fog.

The Olympic Mountains.

It wasn't clear enough to see Mt. Olympus, but the view was still beautiful.

The Carrie Glacier. The Olympics have more glaciers than the Cascades, because they get more snow.

On to Marymere Falls.
